Fractional CTO · Technology Advisor · Chief Architect
Technology problems are rarely only technical.
CTO-level judgement when technology, product and teams need clearer direction.
I work with founders, CEOs and investors — often alongside technical leaders — when strong technology is being held back by unclear priorities, organisational friction, conflicting assumptions or a weak connection to the customer problem. I help make the real constraint visible and turn it into a practical path forward.
A short, confidential conversation to establish whether I can help.

Clarity
Find the real constraint and the customer problem that matters.
Alignment
Connect teams, product, architecture, delivery and go-to-market.
Value creation
Turn technical capability into commercial progress and stakeholder confidence.
Where I help
When technology becomes a leadership issue
I am most useful when the problem crosses technical, organisational and commercial boundaries.
Strong technology, unclear route to value
The solution may be compelling, but the customer problem, adoption path, commercial model or market entry strategy is not yet sufficiently grounded.
Growth is outpacing the technical foundation
The business is scaling, raising or pursuing larger customers, but architecture, delivery or technical leadership needs to mature.
Strong technical people, but the organisation is not moving as one
The issue is rarely capability. It is more often competing priorities, unclear ownership, fragmented decision-making or teams working to different definitions of success.
A critical audience needs confidence
Investors, customers or the board need a credible view of technical direction, risk, scalability and execution.
IN PRACTICE
A strategic software programme looked like an architecture and delivery problem. Underneath, a specialist team in Ireland and headquarters in China were working to different definitions of success, with enough overlapping scope to turn that into rivalry. I didn't try to win the argument. I changed how the two sides met — joint governance, explicit ownership on both sides, and engineers moving in both directions. HQ specialists spent real time in Ireland, not just us presenting to them. Shared ownership moved the programme fast enough to win executive backing: approval, budget, and a place on the product roadmap.

How I work
My starting point is never ‘my solution’.
I begin by grounding the technology in the business objective, the real customer problem and the operating reality around it.
01
Understand the system
Clarify the business objective, customer need, technical landscape, delivery reality and leadership concerns.
02
Find the real constraint
Separate the visible symptom from the structural or commercial issue beneath it.
03
Shape the direction
Align product, architecture, delivery, ownership and the route to market.
04
Build confidence and momentum
Help teams, leaders and stakeholders move forward with greater clarity and trust.
Ways to work
Ways to work with me
The level of involvement depends on the situation, the decision and the leadership support required.
Fractional CTO
Ongoing CTO-level leadership for businesses that need stronger technical direction, leadership alignment or team effectiveness without immediately making a full-time appointment.
Typical shape: 1–2 days a week over 3–6 months or longer, working with founders, technical leaders and engineering teams on direction, decisions and execution.
Technical Advisor
Independent judgement on product, technology, commercialisation or technical leadership — including support to founders, CTOs and engineering leaders facing difficult decisions, organisational friction or an important inflection point.
Typical shape: Light ongoing advisory or a focused engagement around a specific decision or inflection point.
Chief Architect / Architecture Review
A grounded assessment of architecture, scalability, technical debt, delivery dependencies and the practical path forward.
Typical shape: Fixed scope, confirmed after a short scoping conversation, with clear findings, priorities and recommended next steps.
Investor / Customer Technical Narrative
A clearer and more credible technology story for fundraising, enterprise customers, boards, partnerships or strategic transactions.
Typical shape: A focused engagement, timed around the event.
Experience
Built from the inside
I have spent more than three decades building products, software businesses and technical teams across start-ups, scale-ups and global enterprises. My work spans hands-on architecture, product creation, research leadership, commercialisation, portfolio governance and board-level advice.

Perspective
By the time a technology issue reaches the board, product direction, architecture, delivery rhythm, customer reality and team confidence have often begun to diverge. The first task of technology leadership is to make that divergence visible — then decide what actually needs to change.
